Stay the Course: Don’t Drift
Scripture (NKJV)
“Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.”
— Hebrews 2:1
Drifting Happens Quietly
Out on the trail, you don’t usually veer off course all at once.
It’s small, a slight turn, a missed marker, a moment of distraction.
Before long, you’re not where you thought you were.
You didn’t plan to get off track, you just drifted.
Scripture gives the same warning: “…lest we drift away.”
No One Intends to Drift
Drifting in our walk with God rarely starts with a big decision, it starts with small neglect.
A little less time in the Word.
A little less prayer.
A little more distraction.
A little more compromise.
Nothing dramatic.
Just slow movement away from what once mattered.
The Danger of Neglect
Hebrews doesn’t say we run away, it says we drift.
That’s what makes it dangerous.
Drifting doesn’t feel urgent. It doesn’t feel serious.
But over time, it pulls us farther than we realize.
You don’t have to reject truth to lose direction. You just have to neglect it.
Staying on Course
Scripture tells us how to stay steady: “Give the more earnest heed…”
That means paying attention with intention.
Not casual.
Not occasional.
Deliberate.
Staying on course requires:
Time in the Word.
Consistent prayer.
Awareness of where your focus is going.
Correction when you notice drift.
Course correction is part of the walk, the Anchor That Holds
The solution to drifting isn’t trying harder.
It’s anchoring deeper.
Christ is the anchor.
His Word is the guide.
When we stay rooted in Him, we don’t drift far.
And when we do begin to drift, we recognize it sooner.
This Week’s Challenge
Take a moment to check your direction, not your intentions.
Your direction.
Ask yourself:
Am I closer to Christ than I was a few weeks ago?
Or have I been slowly drifting?
If you’ve drifted, don’t overcomplicate it.
Return.
Open the Word.
Pray.
Reset your course.
Prayer
Lord,
Help me to recognize when I begin to drift.
Give me the discipline to stay rooted in Your Word and the humility to return when I get off course.
Keep my heart anchored in You.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
