Travel Light
Scripture (NKJV)
"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."
— Hebrews 12:1
Every Pound Matters
Before heading into the backcountry, experienced overlanders know there's one question worth asking:
"Do I really need this?"
It's tempting to bring everything.
Another toolbox.
Another spare part.
Another chair.
Another "just in case" item.
Before long, the Jeep is overloaded.
The suspension sags.
Fuel economy drops.
Performance suffers.
The trail hasn't changed...
The weight has.
We Carry More Than Gear
Spiritually, many of us are trying to follow Christ while carrying things He never asked us to carry.
Old guilt.
Unforgiveness.
Bitterness.
Fear.
Pride.
Past failures.
Future worries.
Some of it isn't even sinful...
It's simply unnecessary weight.
And every extra burden makes the journey harder.
Lay It Down
Hebrews tells us:
"Lay aside every weight..."
Notice it doesn't just say sin.
It also says weight.
Not everything that slows your walk is evil.
Sometimes it's a relationship that continually pulls you away from Christ.
Sometimes it's busyness.
Sometimes it's trying to please everyone.
Sometimes it's living for approval instead of obedience.
Whatever keeps you from running freely...
Lay it down.
Jesus Never Intended You to Carry It Alone
One of the greatest lies we believe is that strength means carrying everything ourselves.
Jesus says something different.
He says:
"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)
He isn't asking you to become stronger.
He's inviting you to become lighter.
What Are You Carrying?
Imagine stopping at camp tonight.
You begin unloading the Jeep.
Piece by piece.
You set down everything you don't need.
Now ask yourself:
If you could unload one burden from your heart today...
What would it be?
Fear?
Regret?
Anger?
Control?
Now imagine leaving it at the feet of Jesus.
Because that's exactly where it belongs.
This Week's Challenge
Take inventory.
Not of your gear...
Of your heart.
Ask the Lord to reveal one thing you've been carrying that He never intended you to carry.
Then make the decision to surrender it.
Not because it's easy.
Because you're tired of letting it slow your walk with Him.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You for reminding me that You never intended me to carry every burden alone.
Search my heart and reveal the weights that are keeping me from following You freely.
Give me the courage to surrender my fears, my pride, my regrets, and anything else that has become heavier than my trust in You.
Teach me to travel light, knowing that You are more than enough for every mile ahead.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
