What Are You Chasing?
What Are You Chasing?
Scripture (NKJV)
"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
— Matthew 6:21
Every Trail Leads Somewhere
One thing I've learned over the years is that trails never exist just for the sake of wandering.
Every trail has a destination.
Some lead to breathtaking overlooks.
Some lead to hidden lakes.
Some lead back to where you started.
And some...
Lead nowhere you intended to go.
The same is true in life.
Every decision we make, every habit we form, and every priority we embrace is taking us somewhere.
The question isn't whether we're on a trail.
The question is:
Where is this trail leading me?
What We Pursue Shapes Us
Jesus didn't say our treasure follows our heart.
He said our heart follows our treasure.
Think about that.
What you invest your time in...
What occupies your thoughts...
What receives your best energy...
Those things begin to shape your heart.
Our calendars reveal our priorities.
Our spending reveals our values.
Our attention reveals what we truly treasure.
The Wrong Destination
It's possible to spend years chasing something that never satisfies.
Success.
Recognition.
More possessions.
More money.
More approval.
None of those things are evil by themselves.
But they make terrible destinations.
Eventually, every earthly pursuit leaves us wanting more.
Only Christ satisfies the deepest longing of the human heart.
Checking Your Compass
Experienced trail riders don't wait until they're completely lost to check their direction.
They regularly stop.
They look at the map.
They verify they're still heading toward the destination.
We need to do the same spiritually.
Every so often, we should pause and ask:
"Is my life moving me closer to Christ... or simply keeping me busy?"
Investing in What Lasts
Jesus continually pointed people toward eternal things.
Faith.
Love.
Serving others.
Sharing the Gospel.
Building God's Kingdom.
Those investments never lose their value.
Long after careers end...
Long after possessions fade...
Long after accomplishments are forgotten...
What was done for Christ will remain.
This Week's Challenge
Take an honest inventory.
Where has your time gone this week?
Where has your attention gone?
Where has your heart gone?
If those things don't reflect the direction you want your life to go...
Today is a good day to make a course correction.
Prayer
Father,
Search my heart and reveal what I have been pursuing.
Help me to invest my life in what truly matters and to treasure the things that draw me closer to You.
May my heart follow Christ above all else, and may my life reflect an eternal perspective.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Trail Takeaway
Your direction is determined long before you reach your destination.
Choose carefully what you're chasing.
